These are the top 10 tech trends to watch out for in 2021

SHARE Global spending on digital transformation technologies and services such as artificial intelligence and machine learning is forecast to grow an annual 10.4 per cent to $1.3 trillion this year, according to International Data Corporation. Though the wave of investment being ploughed into technology is slower than the 17.9 per cent annual growth last year, it remains one of the few bright spots in a year marked by significant disruptions impacting businesses worldwide. East Africa s Electric Motorbikes Are Fueling a Carbon-Free Future

Todd Gillespie, Bloomberg News (Bloomberg) When Rwanda’s president said last August that he wanted all of the country’s motorbikes to be electric as soon as possible, Ampersand’s waiting list exploded. The country’s first electric motorbike company now has about 7,000 drivers in line for its vehicles. The problem is it can deliver just 40 bikes by the end of March. People are impatient for the most efficient technology.  “Countries here leapfrogged landlines and went straight to cell phones, and leapfrogged conventional finance to go straight to mobile money,” he said. “Now Africa’s growth is leapfrogging petrol to go to electric vehicles.”

Green hydrogen scale-up to slash short-term costs by 40%, Irena says

Grey hydrogen refers to manufacture of the gas using fossil fuels and currently accounts for 95 per cent of production. Blue hydrogen is extracted from natural gas, through a process called methane reformation, which relies on carbon capture and storage. Technology that uses renewables to split water molecules through electrolysis, is being increasingly favoured, as countries look to eliminate fossil fuels from future energy mixes. Green hydrogen is already close to being competitive today in regions where all the favourable conditions align, but these are usually far from demand centres, the intergovernmental agency said in its report. It cites Patagonia as an example, where wind energy could have a capacity factor of almost 50 per cent, with an electricity cost of $25-30 MWh. That is enough to achieve a green hydrogen production cost of about $2.5/kg, which is close to the blue hydrogen cost range, Irena said. But Irena also points out that green hydrogen is still 2-3 times m
