The damages to the quarter-mile long container ship, Ever Given, which ran aground in the canal are just the beginning. Egypt lost millions in toll revenue from hundreds of ships backed up. Somebody has to pay for the earth moving equipment and tugboats that dislodged the Ever Given from the canal’s banks where it was stuck for six days. Then there are damages that will accrue to owners of the cargo items for late delivery charges and for the spoilage to time sensitive agricultural products.

The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday, in an unexpected move, called for the U.S. Solicitor General to step into the long-running legal battle by New Jersey to kill the Waterfront Commission of New York Harbor a bi-state agency created more than 65 years ago to police the region’s ports.

Chatham County Coroner David Campbell confirmed that the worker was Stephen Cobb, 50. At approximately 6 a.m. Friday an accident tragically took the life of a member of the International Longshoremen’s Association Local 1475 at the Port of Savannah’s Garden City Terminal, the GPA statement read.
According to GPA, Cobb s death was caused by an equipment accident involving a rubber-tired gantry crane. The worker was pronounced dead at the scene by the Chatham County Coroner’s Office.
The cause of the accident is under investigation by the Georgia Ports Authority Police Department. The Georgia Ports Authority would like to extend its condolences and concern to the worker’s family and his brothers and sisters of the International Longshoremen’s Association, the release read.
