Holocaust victims are sacrosanct. Nazi murderers are monsters. Such basic truths are obvious to all civilized people, but not so in Lithuania.
Since Lithuania achieved independence in 1990, they have rewritten history. The retreat of the Soviets in the face of the Nazi invasion in 1941 has been reframed as a glorious “Lithuanian Uprising”. The murder of 96% of Lithuanian Jews continues to be a mystery to them. Lithuania simply is unable to figure out just how those Jews were “lost”. (JNS) International Holocaust Remembrance Day is meant to serve two purposes: to memorialize the victims of the Nazi genocide and help prevent future genocides. Last week, on Jan. 27, the day designated by the U.N. General Assembly for this annual commemoration, both purposes were insufficiently served.
I’ll give credit where it’s due. U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres made an appropriate statement: “Today, we honor the memory of the 6 million Jews and millions of others who were systematically murdered in the Holocaust by the Nazis and their collaborators.”

(JTA) A man who died in December reportedly left a significant gift for the French town that shielded his family and thousands of others from the Nazis during World War II.
Eric Schwam, who died at 90 on Dec. 25, 2020, willed his estate to Le Chambon-sur-Lignon, the mountain town where his Jewish family hid for two years, according to CNN.
