Former Dunedin mayor Dave Cull was a fun-loving family man and industrious leader, mourners were told at his funeral today.
Hundreds of people packed into the Dunedin Town Hall to celebrate Cull s life.
Two years previously he was one of four councillors who voted against Dunedin’s proposed new stadium, now known as Forsyth Barr Stadium. ‘’It is a wonderful asset to the city, it is providing enormous benefits,” a visibly upbeat Cull told media of the stadium, which opened in 2011.

Outgoing Dunedin mayor Dave Cull, at a press conference to talk about his time in office. That statement was made with the benefit of hindsight, and driven by Cull’s renowned pragmatism: it was built, so let’s make it work. But it wasn’t easy. Financially the city was driven into austerity during his first term, and it wasn’t until later that Dunedin started experiencing something slightly unusual: growth in levels not seen since the gold rush of the 1860s.
In his first year out of school Withy played for Otago in the National Provincial Championship. First five-eighth Cameron Millar was another Southland product to star in the Highlanders under-20 victory over the Barbarians. Millar kicked 10 from 10 converting all of the Highlanders’ 10 tries and also impressed with ball in hand. Millar initially made his mark playing in Eastern Southland where he led Gore High School to win Southland’s under-18 competition in 2019. Last year he linked with Otago Boys’ where Millar yet again impressed and now is playing club rugby in Dunedin. Southland’s connection in the Highlanders-Barbarians under 20 game didn’t end there.
He was always keen to “try something new and put on a show for everyone watching”. The teenager, who has been doing the sport less than three years, was training and competing with the New Zealand junior development squad in Auckland and Dunedin, and aimed to one day compete in the world championships. Program director for the New Zealand team, Mark Tulloch, said Madoc was one of its brightest prospects and they intended to get him overseas to compete in the highest level of ADCC [worldwide grappling tournament]. Also a keen boxer and kick boxer, Maddock said he was also keen to one day fight in mixed martial arts [MMA].

An Invercargill woman is calling for Southland Boys High School to change one of its house colours after pupils were seen dressed in blackface and afro wigs at their sports day. I was pulling into a park when I saw one of them and thought, Oh my gosh .
