A Saskatchewan First Nation leader says new funding for mental health services is an important step toward preventing suicides among Indigenous youth.
Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations Vice-Chief David Pratt said he was “very pleased” with Monday’s federal budget, which included $597.6 million over the next three years for a tailored mental health strategy for Indigenous communities.

Pratt said his hope now is that the province will also come to the table. The FSIN, which represents 74 First Nations in Saskatchewan, signed a letter with provincial and federal representatives in September 2020, pledging to work together to lower the disproportionately high rates of suicide among First Nations youth.

A person in their 40s has died after being diagnosed with COVID-19, according to the latest numbers from Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Health.
The southeast-area individual was one of two people who died with the virus since yesterday. The other was a person in the 60-to-69 age group from the northwest zone.
The ministry also reported there were 221 new COVID cases in the province, along with 143 newly identified cases of COVID variants of concern. There also were 225 recoveries.
A look at the numbers
The 190 hospitalizations include 146 people receiving inpatient care, with 66 of those in the Regina region and 39 in the Saskatoon area.

There were two COVID-19 related deaths reported on Saturday a person between the ages of 40 and 49 in the Central East zone and the other was over the age of 80 in the North West Zone.
There are 249 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the provincial total to 37,873 cases. As of mid-afternoon on Saturday, there was no additional information on the location of new COVID cases. The full news release and statistics are expected later today once the numbers have been finalized by the Saskatchewan Ministry of Health.
The total number of vaccines administered in the province is 334,063.
