An RCMP news release issued on Tuesday said the woman was taken into custody around 8:20 p.m. on Sunday “in relation to an ongoing investigation.” She was found unresponsive around 11:20 p.m. and two officers called emergency services and began lifesaving measures, the release added. The woman was pronounced dead at the detachment just after midnight.

Because she died in the custody of the Saskatchewan RCMP, Moose Jaw city police have been asked to conduct an independent external investigation into the circumstances. The Saskatchewan Coroners Service is involved in the investigation and the RCMP has also requested that the Ministry of Justice appoint two independent investigation observes one of whom is to be of First Nation ancestry, the release stated.
