Case numbers rise in Chaffee

Chaffee County reached a vaccination rate of 53.5 percent of the total county population fully vaccinated for COVID-19. A total of 18,946 first and second vaccinations have been administered in the county thus far. Case numbers are up in Chaffee County, in part due to two ongoing outbreaks at Buena Vista Correctional Complex and Chaffee County Detention Center. The outbreak at the correctional complex is the fourth event since the pandemic began. Since the current outbreak began April 20, seven inmates and six staff members have tested positive for the virus. At the detention center in Salida, an outbreak which began April 4, has yielded 24 inmate cases, seven staff cases. One of the inmate cases resulted in death.

Missing Colorado mom s husband Barry Morphew appears in shackles in first court hearing since arrest

Andy Moorman, brother of Suzanne Morphew who has been missing since Mother s Day, spoke to Fox News about what he believes happened to his sister, and his hope to finally get closure about what had happened to her. Barry Morphew, the husband of missing Colorado mom Suzanne Morphew, appeared in court Thursday, shackled and wearing a jail-issued jumpsuit as he faces three charges including first-degree murder in connection with his wife’s presumed death.  Morphew, 53, spoke only briefly during his initial appearance in Chaffee County court on Thursday, where he sat alongside his public defender, Daniel Zettler, and wore an orange and white jumpsuit, a blue face mask and shackles. 

Outbreak reported at Chaffee Detention Center

The entire 44 person inmate population was tested for the virus. Only one of the positive cases was symptomatic a press release stated. Those detainees affected are being physically separated from others at the jail facility in an isolation pod. Staff members who have tested are isolating at home. Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office command staff is working with Chaffee County Public Health to complete testing of the rest of the department’s staff members. Public Health is also providing guidance for site level protections. Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office Detentions Center Commander Tracy Jackson said, “Detention Center staff continue to follow COVID precautions and protocols to minimize exposure and logistically accommodate those in isolation.
