Saginaw Chippewa sued the insurer for allegedly overcharging for services that were eligible for reduced, Medicare-like rates  dubbed MLR under federal regulations, causing the tribe to pay millions of dollars more than it should have. The group of signatories, including tribal advocacy organizations, represent more than 300 tribes together, and they wrote in their Wednesday amicus brief supporting Saginaw Chippewa s request to reverse.

The MLR regulations are designed to make discounted pricing available for services authorized by a Native American tribe s contract health services program and provided by a Medicare-participating hospital, according to the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe of Michigan s appellate brief filed Monday in its Employee Retirement Income Security Act case accusing the insurer of overcharging.

Many local tribes including the Saginaw-Chippewa Indian Tribe say they’ve been supporting Haaland since she first ran for the house in 2018. She was even invited to their summer pow-wow in 2019. They say Haaland’s accomplishments highlight what Native youth can hope to achieve. “It brings a sense of, an indigenous attitude, and timekeeping with our culture, being stewards of mother earth.
