SAGINAW, MI - CNN political commentator Van Jones is the keynote speaker for the 2021 Great Lakes Bay Regional Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration, held in January and hosted in a virtual format by Saginaw Valley State University.
The 12th annual event is scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 18 and will be available to stream online for free with registration. To participate, register on SVSU’s website here. The theme for 2021′s event is “Working Together,” according to a news release from the university.

HURON COUNTY One of the places the state of Michigan is testing for the coronavirus is one most people want to forget about their wastewater.
The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy, and Department of Health and Human Services have been working with local health departments, wastewater utilities, universities, and laboratories on a statewide COVID-19 wastewater surveillance feasibility pilot project.

Car crash into Saginaw River that left mother, daughter dead ruled accidental

BAY CITY, MI - Officials have ruled the deaths of two women who died when their car crashed into the Saginaw River as accidental.
Autopsies showed Janet C. Korpal, 81, and Nicholette J. Korpal, 52, died by drowning, said Bay City Public Safety Capt. Nathan Webster. The cause of each woman’s death was ruled accidental, Webster said.
Webster added that Michigan State Police personnel are assisting Bay City public safety investigators in analyzing the black box from the black Mercury Milan the Korpals were inside when it crashed into the Saginaw River on the afternoon of Nov. 30.
