Federal scientists and regulators repeatedly complained they were sidelined by Donald Trump’s administration when they warned of risks to wildlife posed by a California water management plan, according to newly unveiled documents.
The plan, finalized in late 2019, favored the former president’s political allies – farmers upset with environmental protections that kept them from receiving more irrigation water from the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, the hub of California’s water network.

Solano supervisors set federal, state legislative tenets for 2021
FAIRFIELD Solano County supervisors this week approved nine priority issues to focus on in their state legislative platform and six more in the federal platform.
NorCal water conveyance topic of workshop
FAIRFIELD A virtual workshop on water conveyance, with a focus on Northern California, has been scheduled Tuesday.
It is part of a series of workshops held by the California Water Commission and are “not associated with the pending proposal to improve conveyance through the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta,” the commission said in a statement.
“The commission’s goal with these workshops is to learn from diverse voices across the state. Participants from the region are encouraged to share their perspective on conveyance infrastructure needs and priorities, effective partnerships, public benefits of conveyance, possible criteria to assess resilience, efforts in preparing for changing hydrology, and effective financing mechanisms,” the statement said.
Utilizing New Methods to Research Impacts on a Precious Waterway
Seafloor Systems was recently contracted by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) to develop two custom HydroCat-180 unmanned surface vessels (USVs) that will be used to monitor the impacts of saltwater intrusion from the Pacific Ocean into the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta in California. The subsequent research using the new autonomous vessels will provide new insights into maintaining balance within the complex ecosystem.
The Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, commonly referred to as the California Delta, is the hub of the state’s water supply system and a teeming wetland bionetwork (Figure 1). About 500 plant and animal species call the area home, making it one of the largest estuaries in western North America. Two-thirds of California’s salmon pass through the delta on their way upstream to spawn, as well as half of the state’s migrating waterfowl.
