A California paraglider dressed as Santa Claus was spreading holiday cheer overhead before he crashed into power lines Sunday afternoon in the Sacramento suburb of Rio Linda.
The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District responded to the incident near Seventh Avenue, and crews spent an hour pulling the man and his gear from a tangle of lines. Power in the area was temporarily turned off to about 200 customers, and roads were closed.

A man dressed in full Santa gear had just lifted off from his Rio Linda neighborhood north of Sacramento, intending to shower children below with candy canes. But his paraglider sleigh got caught in some power lines, suspending the man for an hour before firefighters safely lowered him to the ground.
“He was in good enough spirits, considering what happened,” said Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District spokesman Chris Vestal, declining to give the man’s name. “He was disappointed he didn’t get to finish his task.”
A “semi-local celebrity,” the man was headed to a community event when his trip was derailed, Vestal said. The cause of Claus’ incident perhaps morning fog, wind or faulty directions to the North Pole remains unclear.
The man, who wasn’t identified, was not injured.
Video from the rescue shows the red-white-and-blue aircraft dangling overhead as Santa sat fastened to the pilot seat. A paraglider dressed as Santa was rescued Sunday in Rio Linda, just outside of Sacramento, after becoming tangled in power lines. He had been delivering candy canes to kids.
Neighbors watched from the ground as crews worked.
Colleen Bousliman, who lives nearby, said the pilot flies overhead often.
“He flies just around so people can see and flies around people’s houses,” she said. “This was the first time he was in his Santa suit.
