(WTOC) - Savannah-Chatham County Public School System leaders discussed during a board meeting Wednesday how they plan to return to classrooms this fall. They say they are cautiously optimistic and planning for a full return to in-person learning, five days a week on Aug. 4, 2021. Superintendent Dr. Ann Levett says they are seeing positive signs in the community, but there are still unknowns like the impact of summer travel, virus variants and more. While they are planning for five days in-person this fall, they say it will be considered a transition year.

(WTOC) - Saturday marked the day several hundred public school teachers received their second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. A partnership between the school district and a local nursing company is what made it possible. Four hundred Savannah-Chatham County Public School System staff received their second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine Saturday. Those WTOC spoke with say it brings them a little closer to things being back to normal.

Savannah-Chatham schools staff to get COVID vaccines starting March 8

Savannah Morning News Now that Gov. Brian Kemp has expanded eligibility for the COVID vaccine to include education staff, Savannah-Chatham County school officials are working on the logistics. All education employees teachers, custodians, bus drivers, cafeteria workers and office staff  are eligible for the vaccine starting March 8. I m open to what works best for the school system. And I think the scenario would be that the school system is able to partner with some of these other community partners and providers who might be able to go and provide vaccinations for the school employees, Dr. Lawton Davis, health director of the Coastal Health District Department of Public Health, explained.

(WTOC) - Savannah-Chatham County Public School System students have officially returned to their classrooms for hybrid learning, but how they’ve returned looks a bit different for safety. “Things are going well, the biggest issue probably right now for us is getting people in the building as quickly as possible, when it comes to take in, getting them home making sure that the right mask is getting into the right mask with the car, you know, those are the logistics that we concern ourselves with,” Jacob G. Smith Elementary Principal Vernon Cole said.
