A proposal to set March dates for in-person learning to resume at the Lompoc Unified School District s campuses failed because of fears that it would give false hope when COVID-19 case rates still remain high.
During Tuesday night s meeting, LUSD board president Bill Heath suggested reopening for younger grades by March 1, then gradually adding other elementary grades and having high-schoolers return to campus March 29.
“We’ve got to follow the guidelines, I understand that. But it gives hope. It instills confidence in the community that we’re trying. I don’t want the board to be on the hook for not starting school again,” Heath said before making his motion, which ultimately failed when the four other board members failed to support it.
