Separately, Marian Regional Medical Center receives doses as part of the Dignity Health system, and the CVS and Walgreens pharmacies receive doses directly from manufacturers to help vaccinate people who live in skilled-nursing and assisted-living communities.
In mid-February, the state will start using Blue Shield of California to oversee statewide vaccine distribution, rather than having each county manage its own process, Do-Reynoso said.
COVID-19-Related Deaths Pass 300 in Santa Barbara County
Do-Reynoso said that 67 deaths have been reported in the past two weeks, and another five deaths were reported later on Tuesday.
The five residents were all older than age 70. Two of them lived in Lompoc, two lived in Santa Maria and one lived in the unincorporated North County, according to Public Health.
A critical shortage of substitute teachers during the pandemic may make it difficult for some California school districts to reopen campuses or to keep open schools already offering in-person instruction.
A sharp decline in applications for substitute teaching credentials since January, as well an exodus of already credentialed substitutes, have left some districts unable to keep classrooms open, especially as more teachers are quarantined after potential exposure to Covid-19.
Substitute pools at school districts are being drained, in part, because temporary teachers are tired of waiting to be called for the scarce jobs available during distance learning or are uncomfortable with the technology required. Some substitutes in districts that have reopened campuses fear returning to the classroom during the pandemic or can’t find child care for children who are home half the week in hybrid instruction.

The following Santa Barbara organizations each met the above-mentioned criteria for the three areas of need and were awarded grants:
Unity Shoppe: For more than 100 years, Unity Shoppe has been building a sustainable support system for all those in the community who face unforeseen crises by providing free and essential services including nutritious food, school clothing, senior care and volunteerism programs, and job training for youth and adults.
Computers for Families: Founded in 1996, the Computers for Families program was created in partnership with the Santa Barbara County Education Office to provide computers and internet access to local students lacking these important educational tools at home.
