Gonzalez was northbound on Alamo Pintado when, for unknown reasons, he allowed his vehicle to drift off the roadway to the shoulder, where he struck the tree, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Gonzalez was flown by Calstar medical helicopter to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, Bertucelli said. Details on his condition were not available.
The cause of the crash remained under investigation, the CHP said, adding that alcohol and drugs do not appear to be factors.
