During a school board meeting this week, MCPS Associate Superintendent James Koutsos said that, in alignment with county COVID-19 guidelines, face coverings will not be required at outdoor graduations for people fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Rockville teacher wins MCPS Mark Mann award
Loretta Woods, the principal at Whetstone Elementary School in Rockville, was recently named the winner of MCPS’ annual Mark Mann Excellence and Harmony Award.
The award, established in 1991, is presented by the superintendent each year to honor an administrator who “has shown exceptional performance in promoting academic excellence, positive human relations, and community outreach,” according to school board documents.

In a unanimous vote Thursday, the Maryland State Board of Education appointed Mohammed Choudhury as the next Maryland State Superintendent of Schools.
Choudhury will begin his term on July 1. Choudhury will replace Dr. Karen B. Salmon who will retire on June 30 after an education career spanning more than 45 years, including five years leading the Maryland State Department of Education.
Choudhury currently serves as associate superintendent and chief strategy, talent and innovation officer for the San Antonio Independent School District. The Maryland State Board of Education voted unanimously on Thursday to approve Mohammed Choudhury to replace Karen B. Salmon as the State Superintendent of Schools on July 1.
Choudhury is currently the associate superintendent of strategy, talent and innovation at San Antonio Independent School District.
“With the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future as a guide for MSDE and every district in the state, the state’s leaders have shown a remarkable commitment to the hard work that’s necessary to bridge gaps and ensure every student has the tools and supports needed to be successful,” Choudhury said in a statement. “I am honored by the board’s selection and look forward to hitting the ground running as Maryland’s next State Superintendent of Schools.”
