Report looks at what to do with the nuclear waste at San Onofre

Southern California Edison, the operator of the now-shuttered San Onofre nuclear power plant, has released plans to try to find a way to move the 3.6 million pounds of nuclear waste from the plant. The upshot of the three-volume report: There are no easy answers and meaningful progress will require pushing the federal government to act, which will take time. At the same time, a new coalition has been formed that will look to enlist local governments, businesses and other groups to generate momentum to make some headway. “It is clear that to make tangible progress on this issue, the federal government must act,” Kevin Payne, Edison’s CEO, said in a statement. “Rather than wait for this to happen, we are going to be a catalyst for change.”

SCE plans relocation of  San Onofre used fuel : Waste & Recycling

17 March 2021 Share Southern California Edison (SCE) has released a three-part strategic plan for the relocation of used nuclear fuel from the shut-down San Onofre plant. The company has also launched a stakeholder coalition with two local counties to advocate for and encourage federal government action to deal with used fuel currently stored at San Onofre and other US nuclear sites. Fuel transfer operations at San Onofre were completed last year (Image: SCE) Units 2 and 3 at the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station - also known as SONGS - were permanently retired in June 2013 due to regulatory delay and uncertainty after problems were found in replacement steam generators. All of the plant s used fuel has now been transferred to a total of 123 dry storage canisters, which remain at the site.

Stephen Bechtel Jr , who grew family engineering firm, dies

Print Stephen Bechtel Jr., the third-generation heir of the Bechtel Corp. construction empire who led its global drive for 30 years and provided President Reagan with key Cabinet members, has died at his home in San Francisco. The company said Bechtel died Monday at 95. No cause of death was given. The Stanford-educated engineer became a billionaire while leading the San Francisco-based firm’s expansion through “mega-projects” in Saudi Arabia, the U.S. and Canada. At 35, he took over as president from his father in 1960 and oversaw contracts for the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station in north San Diego County, the Jubail Industrial City in Saudi Arabia and the James Bay hydroelectric project in Canada. In less than two decades, he doubled the company’s size, according to its website.
