For the first time in decades, every San Diego Unified student will have the chance to go to summer school and summer day camp for free.
Flush with $450 million of federal COVID relief dollars and tens of millions more in state COVID dollars, San Diego Unified is expanding its summer school options and opening them to all students this year.
At least 25,000 children more than a quarter of the district’s students have signed up for the academic summer program since enrollment opened earlier this month. In a normal year, about 2,000 students participate in the district’s summer school.

The San Diego Unified School Board voted Tuesday night to rename Lindbergh/Schweitzer Elementary because the school’s namesakes had expressed antisemitic and racist views.
The school of about 270 students founded in 1980 will be renamed Clairemont Canyons Academy, to reflect the geography surrounding the school in the Clairemont neighborhood.
“As a public school that serves students of all races, ethnicities, religions, and backgrounds, having a welcoming environment is critical to the success of all students,” Principal Victoria Peterson wrote in a March 17 letter requesting the name change.
The school is made up mostly of students of color, with 32 percent Latino students, 26 percent White students, 16 percent African-American students and 9 percent Asian students.
