Education and civil rights leaders from throughout San Diego County showed up at the San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE) to speak out against a local law firm which has been handling 90 percent of school district legal cases throughout San Diego County.
The National Action Network’s San Diego chapter held a press conference on the SDCOE premises prior to Wednesday’s scheduled board meeting to raise its concerns with the law firm of Stutz, Artiano, Shinoff & Holtz, and specifically its senior partner, Daniel Shinoff.
“Today, we will begin a strategy in dealing with the Shinoff Law Group and the SDCOE’s use of this law group,” stated the Reverend Shane Harris, President of the National Action Network’s San Diego chapter.

The San Diego Grand Jury released a report critical of past actions of the San Ysidro School District, citing missing funds, destruction of documents, and an overall lack of financial accountability spanning several years.
The report calls attention to the District’s lax financial controls and lack of oversight by the school board members sitting between 1997 and 2014.
The report lays most of the blame on “staff”, meaning the superintendent and his administrators. The bulk of the inappropriate activity occurred during the tenure of Superintendent Manual Paul who headed the District from 2007 to 2013.
Several members served for long tenures during that period, including Yolanda Hernandez and Jean Romero, who each served over a dozen years on the board. Other members that served during this period were Raquel Marquez Maden, Paul Randolph, Jose Barajas, and Jason Wells.
Sweetwater School District Discovers $30 Million Hole in Annual Budget

South Bay middle and high schools could face budget cuts after the district found it had $30 million less than it expected.
The District made the issue public at a monthly meeting of its Board of Trustees this Monday.
“When our staff was finalizing this [budget] report in late August, we detected some cause for concern of a potential shortfall in closing our financial books for the 17-18 school year,” reads a statement from its Board of Trustees and Superintendent Karen Janney.
The budget miscalculation seems to have been discovered after a new chief financial officer began working at the District last month.

Last March, Boulder Oaks Elementary School teacher Nikki Woodward hugged her third-graders good-bye for the last time as schools nationwide shut down and the pandemic took over life in America.
On Wednesday afternoon, 313 days after the pandemic began, Woodward received her first COVID-19 vaccine, becoming one of the first teachers in San Diego County to get a vaccine.
Her school district, the small, rural Alpine Union in East County, is able to get teachers and all school staff vaccinated through its partnership with local tribes located in Alpine who opened vaccinations to school staff before the rest of San Diego County.
