Print Many avocado growers in San Diego have gone out of business in recent years as they struggle with the rising cost of water, says Charlie Wolk as he walks through a recently forsaken grove in Rainbow that he tended for more than a decade. Farmers are scrambling to modernize their operations, explains Wolk, 84. That includes planting trees closer together to maximize water use, as well as pruning them shorter to save on the cost of picking the popular green fruit. “If you don’t do that, and you just sit there and complain about the cost of water, yeah, you’re going to go out of business guaranteed,” said Wolk, who manages more than a dozen farms in the area. “That’s the reality.”
