In Four Large Cities, California Homicides Increase — The Sacramento Observer

(CBM) – Los Angeles recorded over 300 homicides in 2020, a statistical high mark it had not reached in 11 years. Now, a little over a year later, the body count from that sharp homicide increase continues to stack up not only in California’s largest city but also in other major cities across the state. As authorities begin to investigate the uptick in crime-related deaths, one thing is clear: a majority of those homicides have occurred in urban areas of the state where large numbers of African Americans live.  Within the 15-day period before 2021 began, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) reported 19 murders.  During the first few days of the new year, that number doubled. By the seventh day, 45 people had been shot and killed, the LAPD reports.

San Diego air quality project taps border residents for community-based monitoring

SAN DIEGO    Participating in an air quality study was not something Rudy Lopez would have done had it not been for his son Bruno. Bruno was diagnosed with asthma before his second birthday in 2014. It’s a respiratory condition Lopez had seen before in his sister, who died from an asthma attack at 35. “I don’t think an air study would have peaked my curiosity normally,” Lopez said. But the San Ysidro resident was curious about the role that living near a train station and one of the busiest border crossings played in his son’s condition. He came across the study in an email calling for participants.

City Heights residents fight food insecurity with community fridge

SAN DIEGO    A yellow refrigerator set in an alley in City Heights has become a symbol of hope for dozens of residents who take free food from its shelves every day. The community fridge was installed by a group of young City Heights residents who want to provide free food to neighbors in need. It’s located in an alley between Wilson Avenue and 35th Street. On Monday the fridge was filled with vegetables, cheese, milk and apples. Next to it on shelves were canned fruits, beans and pasta sauce and on the floor were plastic bins filled with personal hygiene items.
