For as long as we have been keeping track (and certainly before), women have faced employment inequities, in opportunity, education pathways and, of course, wages. So it is no surprise that during the pandemic women were disproportionately impacted by layoffs and job loss, causing what many have dubbed a “SHEcession.” While the play on words is cute, the reality it represents is not. In December 2020, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, women lost 156,000 jobs while men gained 16,000. Women ended the year with 5.4 million fewer jobs than they had in February prior to the pandemic while men lost 4.4 million in that time frame. This is largely because traditionally female-dominated sectors education, hospitality and retail took the biggest hit, and continued to decline, as stay-at-home orders swept our nation.

San Diego Workforce Partnership launches free online hub for job-seekers -

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – The San Diego Workforce Partnership released a new interactive online experience Monday intended to empower San Diegans in their job search, educate the community and provide access to promising career and paid training opportunities throughout the region. In 2020, San Diego’s unemployment rate nearly tripled and more than 150,000 people lost their jobs in the span of a year. In response, the San Diego Workforce Partnership launched its free online hub to help individuals find quality jobs in fields that match their interests. The hub is located at workforce.org/jobseekers. “We believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to succeed and should have access to tools, resources and support to achieve their goals,” said Stephen Colon, manager of integrated services at the Workforce Partnership. “That’s why we’ve developed an interactive one-stop online hub with free information, quizzes, resources and opportunities to help San Diegans figure out their

Youth golf organization to hold virtual gala Pro Kids-First Tee, San Diego is set to host a virtual fundraising gala on June 12 that will feature former PGA Tour Pro Chris Riley and Peak Performance Consultant Dr. Jay Brunza. The virtual gala, “Always OPEN: A Celebration of Pro Kids,” will celebrate the organization’s resilience and perseverance over the past year when Pro Kids continued to provide resources, support and connection. Guests will have a virtual opportunity to hear from the organization’s leaders, the youths of Pro Kids, and these special guests. Local guests have the option of having food and wine delivered to enjoy during the event as well. Pro Kids-First Tee, San Diego was founded in 1994 by former San Diego Charger Ernie Wright with the idea that teaching underserved youths how to play golf could help develop skills needed for success in school and life.
