As people prepare to celebrate the holiday weekend, County health officials are reminding the public to continue taking precautions to avoid getting and transmitting COVID-19.
While the number of local COVID-19 cases has significantly decreased in recent weeks, not enough San Diegans have been vaccinated for the region to achieve herd immunity.

People who have not been vaccinated should be wearing a mask, keeping their distance and avoiding large gatherings.

Anyone 50 and is eligible and by April 15, everyone 16 and up will be, too.
Other eligible groups include health care workers and those who work or live in long-term care facilities are eligible. You can also get vaccinated if you care for an elderly or disabled person, provided that you have a doctor’s note confirming that you are what the state calls an informal caretaker.
Teachers, police officers and grocery store workers became eligible to get their shots beginning Feb. 27. People with serious underlying medical conditions or disabilities that make them vulnerable to COVID-19 became eligible on March 15, along with homeless people; those living in jails, detention centers and other congregate settings; and public transit workers.
This second dose is all that stands between Nancy and Michael holding their loved ones again.
“We haven’t touched our grandchildren in almost a year,” Michael said.

So, when the couple learned that tens of thousands of vaccine doses in San Diego County are administered to people living outside of the county, they said they were both feeling surprised and frustrated.
“How did that happen?” Michael asked. “Where was the breakdown in the system?”
NBC 7 Investigates found 23,249 people who received both vaccine doses in San Diego County live outside of the county’s jurisdiction. According to vaccination figures released on Wednesday, the county reported that people living outside of the county made up 4% of fully vaccinated individuals.
