He marks the deer head for disposal and seals the extracts for testing. He wants to know if the animal was carrying chronic wasting disease, a contagious brain infection that is fatal and can ravage wild herds of deer and elk. Heale is a wildlife health biologist for the Arizona Game and Fish Department and he coordinates the collection of thousands of samples each year for a statewide surveillance program. Arizona has yet to record its first case of chronic wasting disease in a local animal, but it borders states that have been dealing with the disease for years.
