To San Francisco artist Sarah Delson, luck is not always a lady. Sometimes it is a harridan bearing down hard on your formerly happy life.
In her early 50s, the dynamic, yoga-practicing artist, wife and mother was diagnosed with two simultaneous forms of cancer. Now, eight years later, she has celebrated her survival with a heart-shaped sculpture covered with hundreds of red lucite dice. She has named it “Chance.”
“Going to the doctor, for me, was a crapshoot,” she explains with characteristic directness.
“I’ve always had the sense that in regards to health, you’re always just rolling the dice.”

A San Francisco man has been charged with attempted murder, carjacking, sexual assault and other serious crimes after authorities say he attacked his on-and-off girlfriend of many years and stabbed her ex-boyfriend in a fit of jealousy.
On Monday, the Alameda County district attorney’s office charged 32-year-old Losvel Bethea with attempted murder, by means of stabbing with a knife, in connection with a man identified in court papers as John Doe. Bethea was also charged with carjacking, forcible oral copulation, assault with a deadly weapon, false imprisonment by violence and kidnapping in connection with a woman identified in court papers as Jane Doe. He was also charged with several misdemeanors.

Today, entire neighborhoods are caring for each other. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, mutual aid has proven an effective response, even if it is not ideal. While these efforts are often contextualized within a radical heritage that includes the Black Panther Party’s community programs of the 1960s and 1970s, these genealogies of mutual aid tend to overlook queer care and volunteer responses to AIDS in the 1980s. Looking deeper at that response can shed light on commonalities between the AIDS/HIV and COVID-19 crises, but it also points to a much deeper tradition of the capacity of humans to care for one another, independent of the state (especially when its response has been negligent).
