San Francisco is seeing an increase in COVID cases. What s going on?

San Francisco has recorded low COVID-19 case rates for several months, and has one of the highest vaccination rates among large U.S. cities. As of Monday, 82% of the eligible population has received at least one vaccine dose, and 75% are fully vaccinated.
But the city logged a noticeable uptick on Tuesday: 153 new cases were added to its total, according to the California Data Coalition, whose case counts power the Chronicle Coronavirus Map. San Francisco health officials noted that the 153 number likely includes backdated cases.
