Robert Macfarlane, whose latest book is “Ghostways: Two Journeys in Unquiet Places,” written in collaboration with artist Stanley Donwood and writer Dan Richards, is interviewed by host Richard Wolinsky.
This short book examines two strange areas in England, Orford Ness, a spit of sand in the southeast of England, not far from Cambridge, which was used as a weapons testing site in the Cold War, and the holloways of Dorset, strange paths beaten over centuries, and often covered over by trees, almost as caves.
In this interview, recorded December 8, 2020, he talks about the book, both places in England, how the pandemic has affected his life, and how climate change is affected by the shutdown.

Tony Award-winner Jefferson Mays performs during a one-man high-tech “A Christmas Carol Live” that is being filmed for streaming this month at the empty 3,000-seat United Palace. The one-man show is an example of how many who work in the theater are increasingly defying COVID-19 by refusing to let it stop their art. (Courtesy of A Christmas Carol Live via AP) Previous Next

Theater adapting in pandemic

NEW YORK – There s theater on Broadway. You just have to adjust your sights.
More than a hundred blocks north of Manhattan s shuttered theater district but on that same famed thoroughfare, an actor recently read his lines from a huge stage.
‘The Jewelry Box’ is a gift of perspective this holiday season
San Francisco Playhouse/Courtesy
“The Jewelry Box” is a one-man show written and performed by Brian Copeland, and produced by San Francisco Playhouse. Like many Christmas tales, “The Jewelry Box” highlights what love and kindness can accomplish, but the relatability of the characters and their experiences sets this story apart from more magical Christmas tales. The characters’ responses to soul-wrenching injustices such as eviction, a selfish father and financial hardships, are touching reminders that the holiday season is really about love, family and kindness everything else is simply tinsel on the tree.
