Los Angeles County’s jump in coronavirus continued Saturday as new rules requiring masks in public indoor setting was set to take effect, a restriction officials hope will slow the spread of the virus among the unvaccinated.
L.A. is by far the biggest jurisdiction in the nation to require masks again. But because COVID-19 cases are rising across the nation due to the highly infectious Delta variant, officials elsewhere will be watching to see if the effort works.
People who have received vaccinations are protected from the Delta variant. But officials are asking them to wear masks indoors as a way of also forcing unvaccinated people who are at risk to do the same. About 52% of L.A. County residents are fully vaccinated, and roughly 60% have gotten at least one shot. But given the region’s enormous population, that still leaves millions vulnerable.

With Covid-19 cases rising and the Delta variant gaining increased prevalence in the United States, health experts are reiterating that vaccines are effective in the ways that matter most: preventing severe disease, hospitalization and death.
Speaking to CNN s Jim Acosta on Saturday, Dr. Anthony Fauci said the vaccines are shown to be highly effective in preventing symptomatic, clinically apparent disease. When you start seeing what s called breakthrough infections, if you look carefully at them, the overwhelming majority of those are people who either have no symptoms or only very mild symptoms, Fauci said. So the vaccines are still very, very effective in preventing severe disease.
