SMCISD board passes polling locations, voting hours for upcoming election

Wednesday, February 24, 2021 The San Marcos Consolidated ISD Board of Trustees took action on several items regarding its upcoming May 1 election.  SMCISD will hold an election for two at-large board positions. Trustee Anne Halsey is the lone at-large incumbent running for reelection. Five additional candidates will be vying for the two board positions: Nicholas Costilla, Roger Davis, Andrew Fay, Sylvia Muzzy and Mari Salmi.  During Monday’s regular meeting, the board approved poll locations in Hays County for Election Day voting and listed the early voting location, dates and times for the upcoming election.  Early voting will take place at Live Oak Health (formerly Hays County Health Department) 401 Broadway St. #A in San Marcos; Hays County Government Center, 712 S. Stagecoach Trail #1012, San Marcos; and Texas State Performing Arts Center 430 Moon St., San Marcos.

San Marcos CISD board trustee arrested for DWI

Saturday, February 20, 2021 San Marcos Consolidated ISD board trustee, and former San Marcos mayoral candidate, Juan Miguel Arredondo was arrested Thursday for driving while intoxicated.  Arredondo, 29, was arrested by the San Marcos Police Department for DWI on Thursday and was released from the Hays County Jail on $1,500 surety bond.  Arredondo said it’s with “great remorse” that he apologizes for the actions that resulted in his arrest.  “I am sorry to my family, friends, and to everyone in San Marcos who I represent,” Arredondo said in a statement. “I understand my actions affect my community and that my conduct carries with it a lot of consequences, both legal and professional. I cannot overstate my gratitude for the public’s understanding, support and thoughts during this time. I intend to work doubly hard to continue to deserve that support and to restore the public’s confidence in me.” 

SMCISD, SMA, TXST announce additional closures

The grade schools and university made their announcements Tuesday afternoon, citing ongoing weather conditions.  SMCISD said its campuses and offices will remain closed through Wednesday. No in-person or virtual learning will take place Wednesday, and staff will have the day off.  SMCISD made the decision due to power outages across San Marcos and worsening weather overnight. The National Weather Service has placed Hays County in winter storm warning with the potential of freezing rain to occur.  San Marcos Academy will also be closed Wednesday. SMA will continue to provide updates regarding any additional closures at smabears.org. Texas State University announced it will be closed through Saturday at 8 a.m. All classes and events, including virtual and online learning, have been canceled, the university said in a statement. Winter Weather Updates: Hays County issues disaster declaration; Schools, businesses close ahead of deteriorating conditions

Hays County Judge Ruben Becerra issued a local disaster declaration amid severe winter weather conditions. Becerra signed the declaration on Sunday, which lasts for seven days or until winter weather conditions no longer exist.  “In collaboration with emergency management services in the community, we determined that weather-related conditions pose a significant threat to Hays County citizens and their property,” Becerra said in a statement. “Out of an abundance amount of caution, we will take measures to ensure the highest level of response and safety. Thanks to the outpouring of support by our staff and community, we stand vigilant during this time.”
