SAN PEDRO (CNS) - A San Pedro resident pleaded not guilty today to murdering his former Cal Poly San Luis Obispo classmate Kristin Smart, who was last seen walking back to the college dormitories from an off-campus party nearly 25 years ago.
Paul Ruben Flores who had long been described as a “prime suspect by authorities was arrested last Tuesday at his home in San Pedro and charged a day later with killing the 19-year-old freshman, whose body has not been found.
The criminal complaint alleges that the now 44-year-old defendant killed Smart on May 25, 1996, while he was “engaged in the commission of, or attempting to commit, the crime of rape.
Paul and Ruben Flores appeared in court Monday and pleaded not guilty to charges.

Paul Flores, 44, appeared via video in San Luis Obispo Superior Court Monday. He, along with his father, Ruben Flores, were arrested last week as part of the decades-long investigation into the disappearance of Kristin Smart.
Flores is accused of killing Kristin Smart during an attempted rape at his dorm at Cal Poly in 1996. He is believed to be the last person to see Smart alive.

Paul Flores, 44, was charged with first-degree murder in the killing that authorities said happened as he tried to rape Smart in his dorm room after an off-campus party at California Polytechnic State University campus in San Luis Obispo, 160 miles northwest of Los Angeles. Witnesses said Smart was intoxicated and Flores had said he would walk her home.
Ruben Flores, 80, who has denied helping to hide the young woman’s body, pleaded not guilty to a charge that he was an accessory after murder.
