Stockton college student Kristin Smart went missing in 1996 from the Cal Poly University campus in San Luis Obispo.
Former fellow Cal Poly student Paul Flores was arraigned Thursday morning on first-degree murder charges in connection with her death. His father, Ruben Flores, was also arraigned on charges as an accessory to murder after the fact.
Both men appeared before a San Luis Obispo County Courtroom from jail via livestream. The judge in the case, Craig B. van Rooyen, approved a request from defense attorneys to continue the arraignment to Monday afternoon when there will be arguments over bail and pleas entered into the record.

A San Luis Obispo County Superior Court judge on Thursday ordered all parties in the Kristin Smart murder case not to talk about the case publicly.
Paul Flores, 44, is charged in the murder of Kristin Smart, who has been missing since 1996. Prosecutors also charged Paul Flores’ 80-year-old father Rubin Flores on an accessory after-the-fact charge.

During a hearing on Thursday morning, Superior Court Judge Craig van Rooyen ruled in favor of a motion for a protective order Paul Flores’ attorney Robert Sanger filed yesterday. Sanger argued the protective order was needed because of the publicity the case has attracted and the need to secure an impartial jury.

ANNOUNCEMENT Speaking at Cal Poly, SLO County Sheriff Ian Parkinson said the Sheriff’s Office arrested Paul and Ruben Flores on April 13 in connection with Kristin Smart’s 1996 disappearance. On the morning of April 13, Paul, 44, was taken into custody at his residence in San Pedro and Ruben, 80, in Arroyo Grande. At a press conference on April 14, SLO County District Attorney Dan Dow announced that his office was charging Paul with first-degree murder. Dow alleged that Paul killed Smart while attempting to rape or raping her. The district attorney alleged that Ruben helped conceal Smart s body after she was murdered.
