Sanford, Avera hosting Flying for Life blood drive next week

Sanford Health and Avera will be hosting a Flying for Life blood drive from May 17-22 in hopes to encourage people to donate blood for those in need.
Similar to the Battle of the Badge event held by the police and fire department, this event will focus on air ambulances, the Sanford AirMed and Avera Careflight teams.
Gary Vandenberg, manager of Sanford AirMed in Sioux Falls, said the idea for the event centered around the shortage of blood on board of air flights over the past year. It was unsettling that we did not have all of what we needed for when we would go on calls, he said. We do 2,000 flights a year throughout the region and people rely on blood on a daily basis.
