Ashfall delays start of Trinity term Article by April 14, 2021 The start of the new school term has been delayed by one week as the Ministry of Education, Technological and Vocational Training embarks on a massive cleanup of school plants, due to the ash fall from the La Soufrière volcano. Term 3, for all students in public nursery, special schools, primary and secondary schools will now commence on Monday, April 26. This applies to both face-to-face and online classes. Minister of Education, Santia Bradshaw, made the announcement this morning during an update on the reopening of schools.   The Trinity term was initially set to begin on Tuesday, April 20, with Class Three and Class Four students, preparing for the Common Entrance Examination, and Fifth and Sixth Form students, doing Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) examinations, returning to physical school plants. Other year groups would be working online.

19-year-old bringing the edge to farming in Barbados

Ravindra Chanda, is a 19-year-old farmer and owner of Alex Aquaculture Systems. By all accounts, agriculture is not a job for the faint-hearted and 19-year-old, Ravindra Chandan argues that only those with a passion for the field can be truly successful.  Chandan, who fondly goes by Alex, is pursuing his diploma in Agriculture  at the Samuel Jackman Prescod Institute of Technology (SJPI).  He is the owner of Alex Aquaculture Systems where he builds aquaponic systems and he is also a farmer.  The ambitious teen never planned to jump into the agriculture sector and his father, who is also a farmer, wanted him to pursue a career in mechanical engineering. It was when he entered upper fifth form at the St George Secondary that he thought maybe this is my calling . 

SJPI announces new start to semester two

SJPI announces new start to semester two Article by April 6, 2021 The Samuel Jackman Prescod Institute of Technology (SJPI) has advised that as a result of last week’s disruption, semester two of the 2020-2021 academic year will now begin on Monday, April 12. Persons who have received acceptance letters are invited to register, and fees may be paid at the cashier on the Wildey Main Campus, from Tuesday, April 6 to Friday, April 9, between 9:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Meanwhile, SJPI’s office at its Distance and Continuing Education/Open and Flexible Learning Centre has reopened. In addition, the SJPI has extended the deadline for applications for courses until Friday, April 9. (BGIS)
