KANSAS CITY Canada conceded a goal 20 seconds in and lost 1-0 to the U.S. in their final preliminary-round game Sunday at the Gold Cup.
The Canadian men found their way back into the game after Shaq Moore’s opening goal but were unable to breach the U.S. defence despite having the edge in play as the match wore on.
With both teams already qualified for the quarterfinals, the game at a soldout Children’s Mercy Park decided first place in Group B. The North American rivals came into the game with the same goal difference but 70th-ranked Canada had scored one more goal, meaning the 20th-ranked Americans had to win to finish first while the Canadians only needed a draw.

Tajon Buchanan and Matt Turner returned to CONCACAF Gold Cup action as their respective nations met in their final match of group stage action.
Canada came into Sunday’s matchup atop Group B with consecutive 4-1 wins over Martinique and Haiti. The United States came into the match second in Group B after a 1-0 win over Haiti and a 6-1 win over Martinique. Both Canada and the US were tied on goal differential with a +6-goal differential.
