Capitals vs Flyers Recap: Caps Finish Season Series Against Flyers With 2-1 OT Win Share this story Photo by Patrick McDermott/NHLI via Getty Images Alex Ovechkin. Nicklas Backstrom. John Carlson. Evgeny Kuznetsov. Ilya Samsonov. Is that a list of Washington Capitals’ stars? Maybe, but it is also a list of players who are unavailable for the Caps tonight! Fun fact, the last time the Capitals played a game without Ovechkin, Backstrom, Carlson, and Kuznetsov was on January 31, 2006 Ovechkin missed the game and the other three weren’t on the roster yet. Fun times! With all of these absences, here’s what the lines looked like during warmups tonight:

Paired with the Boston Bruins win over the Buffalo Sabres, the Flyers were mathematically eliminated from the 2021 Stanley Cup Playoffs. A pair of power play goals by Yegor Sharangovich (13th and 14th of the season) sent the Devils to the first intermission with a 2-0 lead.

Welcome to The Week of Pity; Four Straight Against Philadelphia Flyers

Photo by Andy Marlin/NHLI via Getty Images I hate the New York Rangers. I refer to them as Our Hated Rivals. However, the New Jersey Devils have two key rival teams that the Devils fans, the People Who Matter, cannot stand. The other team is the Philadelphia Flyers. The People Who Matter who live in southern New Jersey may feel that they are the most hated. Others may have sharper memories if only because of the Flyers’ famously garish orange and black color scheme. For most, myself included, they are second in hate-ability compared to Our Hated Rivals. I have sometimes called them the Second Rate Rivals. Such as in this headline. That is an accurate description of how they stack up in the eyes of plenty of Devils fans around the world. I understand it has not caught on. Just like the Philadelphia Flyers have not caught on as a big hockey team.
