Crash on 68 kills Bellefontaine man
A multi-vehicle accident killed one person and injured others on Monday just after 2 p.m.
At 2:02 p.m. the Champaign County Communications Center received a 911 call of a rollover traffic crash that had just occurred in the 2300 block of North U.S. 68. Champaign County Sheriff’s Office deputies, City of Urbana Fire Division and Macochee Ambulance District responded to the scene.
Upon arrival, it was discovered that a 2004 Honda Accord, driven by Gavin Stanley, age 22 of Bellefontaine, was traveling northbound on U.S. 68 in the 2300 block when he traveled left of center for an unknown reason, according to information from the sheriff’s office.

SIDNEY The year 2020 was a year unlike one that Shelby County residents had never experienced in their lifetime. The year had individual events which changed lives but non like the coronavirus pandemic which started in March and continues to today.
The editorial staff selected what they felt were the top stories of 2020.

The COVID-19 pandemic dominated the news cycle and affected lives more than few, if any, events ever have.
The Sidney-Shelby County Health Department has reported more than 3,000 cases of COVID-19 in the county. More than 100 residents have been hospitalized because of the virus, and there have been 18 confirmed deaths. At times Shelby County had one of the state’s highest incidence rates.
CHAMPAIGN Co., Ill. (WAND) â Changes are coming to the Champaign County Sheriffâs Office in 2021. Sheriff Dustin Heuerman is launching three new ways to connect with the community.
 âThe goal of my administration has always been to provide fair and impartial processes while working to ensure the safety of those in Champaign County,â stated Sheriff Heuerman. âEvents that occurred in 2020 gave me an opportunity to reflect on what the Sheriffâs Office does well, where we can improve, and how we can help the public have an accurate perception of what we do every day.â
These initiatives will focus on areas of the county that are not served by a municipal police department. The first is a justice diversion program designed to keep people out of jail.
CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, Ill. (WAND) - A murder suspect who authorities accidentally released from state custody is back behind bars Thursday.Â
According to the Champaign County Sheriff s Office, Darrion White was released from the Illinois Department of Corrections earlier in 2020 while a a first-degree murder charge was pending. A press release from the sheriff s office explained what happened that led to his release from custody. The Sheriffâs Office is always looking to improve processes for quality control and effectiveness, a press release said. Upon an internal review of our processes, it was noted that the pending murder charge was relayed to the Illinois Department of Corrections on their required paperwork. It is also common practice by the sheriffâs Office to include a detainer letter with IDOC paperwork, however an internal miscommunication resulted in the detainer letter not being included with the paperwork.
