The number of deaths related to COVID-19 at the health-care facility are increasing by the day. Dawn Harsch, director of corporate communications for VestraCare, said 12 patients have died since the pandemic began. “The residents in our care are like family to us, and each loss is devastating to our team,” Harsch said in a statement to the OBSERVER. Most of the deaths are attributed to the recent cluster of cases that began after the Christmas holiday. “As the world has witnessed, this virus does not discriminate,” she said. “For nearly a year, our team has worked tirelessly to control the spread of the virus and keep it out of our facility. No Immediate Plans For Tax Breaks For Ripley Solar Project | News, Sports, Jobs

Gregory Bacon There are no plans to offer any tax breaks for the massive solar project proposed in South Ripley. During the recent Chautauqua County Legislature meeting, Mark Odell, a Republican legislator from Brocton and who is also a board member of the county Industrial Development Agency, said he has been assured from leadership in both organizations, that no votes on a Payment In Lieu Of Tax agreement are expected for the next eight to 12 months. “What that does it allows our legislative body to do its diligence,” he said. ConnectGen, which is based in Houston, is developing a large-scale solar and storage project in South Ripley along Sherman Road. The company expects to install up to 270 megawatts of solar with a 20 MW battery storage component in the area, which has the potential to power over 60,000 homes in New York state annually. The target commercial operation date is in late 2023.

The Countywide Shared Services Initiative was proposed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo in spring 2017 and later adopted by the state Legislature as part of the 2018 state budget. The initiative established panels in each county across the state, and each is convened by the county executive and is made up of mayors and supervisors in the county. The panel is tasked with developing a shared services plan, which must be reviewed by the Chautauqua County Legislature for comment, presented to the public for comment and ultimately voted on by the panel before being sent to the state Department of State. The process became ongoing for 2019-21 and also allowed panels the option to delay making changes or adopting new plans when appropriate.
