What is happening at nursing homes across our region is extremely heartbreaking. Since the pandemic began, our most vulnerable for contracting COVID-19 are those whose health has been compromised or the senior population.
Sadly, recent numbers are proving that once the virus enters a nursing or adult care facility, it only begins to percolate. As of last week, there had been more than 30 deaths and about 200 total cases in Warren County’s facilities. Within the last three weeks, the Chautauqua Nursing & Rehabilitation Center that is located in Chautauqua County, has reported 12 deaths and 40 cases involving patients with another 34 affecting the staff.
Chautauqua Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Dunkirk has reported 12 deaths from COVID-19 since late December.
An abrasion on the toe of a resident at Chautauqua Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Dunkirk seemed harmless enough in early September. But when further medical treatment was delayed, and the ailment became wet gangrene, it led to a fatal outcome.
Michele Starwalt-Woods, who told the OBSERVER of her cousin’s experience over the last four months, expressed both sadness and frustration in the outcome. “I was not notified until the first week in November that there was a wound,” she wrote. “My cousin declined pre-optive tests in order to determine if he is a candidate for amputation, and told the Palliative care team at Sisters Hospital that he wanted to, ‘Go home and die. ”

Chautauqua Nursing & Rehabilitation Center officials in Dunkirk are confirming the worst. The number of deaths related to COVID-19 at the health-care facility are increasing by the day.
Dawn Harsch, director of corporate communications for VestraCare, said 12 patients have died since the pandemic began. “The residents in our care are like family to us, and each loss is devastating to our team,” Harsch said in a statement to the OBSERVER.
Most of the deaths are attributed to the recent cluster of cases that began after the Christmas holiday. “As the world has witnessed, this virus does not discriminate,” she said.

Unfortunately, as statistics have shown, this virus is particularly dangerous to the elderly and those with underlying health conditions.
