A man called Labour’s Timaru Rangitata electorate office and made bomb threats in a desperate bid to get medication for his chronic fatigue, his lawyer told a court at sentencing. Robert Alex Wills made three threatening calls to Rangitata MP Jo Luxton’s office within 25 minutes, claiming he would kill himself and others with a bomb if they did not help him get some medication, on the morning of October 23. Wills, 23, was sentenced to 12 months’ supervision when he appeared before Judge Tom Gilbert in the Timaru District Court on Thursday, having pleaded guilty to threatening harm to people or property.

A recidivist burglar who broke into the lounge bar at Timaru’s Phar Lap Raceway and made off with an empty cash register has been jailed. Royce Cole Tyler Morgans jemmied open the back door to the Grey Way function room with a screwdriver and stole a cash register, only to dump it in a stream after discovering there was no money inside. Morgans, 22, was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment and ordered to pay $250 in reparation when he appeared before Judge Tom Gilbert in the Timaru District Court on Thursday, having pleaded guilty to burglary.

Rodney Ballantine admitted careless driving and driving with excess blood alcohol when he appeared in the District Court in Timaru.
A South Canterbury man taken to hospital after his vehicle slid off the road into two fences was more than four times over the legal alcohol limit. Rodney Ballantine’s vehicle had to be written off after the crash which substantially-damaged the fences and required an ambulance trip to Timaru Hospital in the early hours of November 28, 2020. Ballantine, 29, pleaded guilty to careless driving and driving with excess blood alcohol content when he appeared before Judge Tom Gilbert in the Timaru District Court on Tuesday.

Reuben Jacob Allan, 44, has pleaded guilty to three counts of causing injury by carelessly operating a vehicle.
Three friends came away from a day out eating, drinking, and duck shooting with serious injuries after their host flipped the vehicle they were travelling in. Reuben Jacob Allan was entertaining friends at his Oamaru farm when he turned his ute sharply in pursuit of a hare, losing control of the vehicle as it rolled completely over before coming to rest on its side, overnight July 25, 2020. Allan, 44, pleaded guilty to three counts of causing injury by carelessly operating a vehicle when he appeared before Judge Joanna Maze in the Timaru District Court on Tuesday.
Luke Edward Workman, 22, has pleaded guilty to injuring with reckless disregard.
A Waimate man suffered three fractures to his ribs after being tackled to the ground and kicked repeatedly during a brawl outside a pub. Luke Edward Workman told police he grabbed the victim from behind and threw him to the ground, because he saw the other man raise a fist to punch his friend during an escalating argument outside the Royal Tavern on Shearman St, Waimate, about 9.30pm on July 31, 2020. Workman, 22, pleaded guilty to injuring with reckless disregard when he appeared before Judge Joanna Maze in the Timaru District Court on Tuesday.
