An armed robber is facing a jail sentence after telling officers he was at work during the raid and claiming his brother was the offender.
Hammer-wielding robber raided bookies and left a sock behind AN armed robber tried to pin a violent betting shop raid on his own brother. Geoffrey Urwin has been convicted of carrying out the terrifying robbery on a bookmakers in Gateshead - after detectives used height analysis to prove his guilt. Newcastle Crown Court was told how the 37-year-old burst into Corals on Durham Road, Low Fell, in August 2018 wearing a balaclava and carrying hammer covered in a sock. He swiped around £800 from the till before threatening staff with the hammer and ordering them to open the safe. A brave customer then confronted Urwin which resulted in him fleeing the scene, but inadvertently left the sock that had been covering the hammer at the scene.
