He was proud of all his children and grandchildren, but there was an element of tough love in the Duke of Edinburgh’s approach to parenthood and grandparenting.
But there was also tenderness and support, as seen when he walked with his Harry and William behind their mother s coffin, at her funeral.
While he was said to have reduced a young Prince Charles to tears with his firm and sometimes public rebuking, he walked with grandchildren after William refused to walk unaccompanied.
Philip and Elizabeth produced an heir to the throne within a year of marrying and Charles Philip Arthur George was born on the evening of November 14 1948 in the Buhl Room at Buckingham Palace.

1934
An 8-year-old then-Princess Elizabeth met Philip at the wedding of Princess Marina and Prince George. They reconnected at 13 and 18 years old at the Royal Naval College in Dartmouth and began to exchange letters.
1947

PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari has extended his condolences to Her Majesty the Queen over the death of her husband Prince Philip who passed on peacefully at the age of 99.
Reacting to the death of the longest-serving Queen’s consort, President Buhari in a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu said: “The death of the Duke of Edinburgh is the end of an era. Prince Philip was one of the greatest and publicly recognisable international figures whose contributions to the Commonwealth will be remembered for generations to come.
