(AP) When the American Library Association recommended last March that all libraries in the United States close their doors to the public in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the national organization fully realized the gravity of its decision even as other businesses and nonprofits around the country were faced with the same difficult choice. “It is very difficult for us to put forward this recommendation,” the ALA Executive Board said on March 17, 2020. “Libraries pride themselves on being there during critical times for our communities. We are often the only institutions to remain open during times of crisis. Service and stewardship to our communities are core to our profession.”

The district distributed 2,004 vaccine doses to staff members last week, according to the district spokesperson Andy Pruitt. The district plans to distribute another 2,000 doses this week.

The district partnered with the Medical University of South Carolina to host a mass vaccination clinic at the former Garrett campus. Cathy Damico, a fourth grade teacher at St. James-Santee Elementary School, was the first teacher of the day to be vaccinated. She said she got the shot for her students.

(WCSC) - Representatives from the Charleston County School District will answer questions Friday about their plans to vaccinate teachers and school staffers. That news conference is set for 3 p.m. at the former Garrett Academy in North Charleston which the district said will serve as “the central vaccination center” over the coming weeks. The district alerted parents Friday morning that each school with have a designated vaccination day. All school-level employees will be eligible to receive the vaccine on the designated day for their school, the district said in a separate news release.
