An Aberdeen children’s charity is encouraging people to take part in fundraising challenges to help support families across the region. Charlie House, which supports children and young people with complex disabilities and/or life-limiting conditions and their families, is celebrating the new year with a raft of new opportunities and challenges for people to take part in. It has already launched its 1,000 mile challenge, which urges people to walk, cycle or run 1,000 miles over the course of a year while being sponsored.

As Covid-19 has meant that not all of the cards could be designed by children this year – MPs and MSPs have still shown their Christmas spirit, either through cards or donations to charity. An online auction set up by Aberdeen children’s charity Charlie House has raised more than £8,000. Charlie House, which supports children and young people with complex disabilities and life-limiting conditions and their families, launched the virtual event on December 1. It offered items such as a luxury staycation for two, Royal Deeside Four Ball, artwork, whisky, flowers for a year, jewellery, dance lessons, hampers, handbags, a Mulberry matching purse and bag set and more.

Taking place over Zoom, the eight-minute-long sessions give children the opportunity to see and chat with Santa. Calls can also be upgraded for £5, which gives a USB with a recording of the call, as well as a small gift. Money raised from the event will go towards Charlie House, which supports children and young people with complex disabilities and/or life-limiting conditions and their families. Susan Crighton, director of fundraising at Charlie House, said: “We were devastated to learn that under the guidance issued by the Scottish Government this week, it is not possible to hold an indoor Santa experience in a Level 3 area.
