FOXBOROUGH, Mass. Quick-hit thoughts and notes around the New England Patriots and NFL:
1. Weis loves Mac: The last thing former New England offensive coordinator Charlie Weis wants to do is preach to the Patriots about what they should do at quarterback this offseason. In his trademark blunt way, he characterized it this way: I don t want to be one of those people telling them how they are dumbasses if they don t do that.
With that context, Weis, who coached in the team s first three Super Bowl championships, is high on Alabama s Mac Jones as a great fit. What are the two most important components of a star quarterback? They have the it factor. And they re accurate. That s who he was, Weis said.

Good morning!
Former Turners Falls High School football coach Donald Russell died on Feb. 2 in Plano, Texas, at the age of 93. He was born in Quincy and graduated from Bates College in 1951 where he was a two-way tackle for coach Raymond “Duckie” Pond.
Russell taught for a few years in Maine at Hollis High School and Thornton Academy in Saco, but football was in his blood and he came to the Powertown in 1955 to teach and coach at TFHS.
“It’s been so long,” said Stash Koscinski, “but I liked him. The coaches were always friendly with us.”

Patrick Graham, wearing Giants gear, was sitting in his East Rutherford office, staring at a computer screen, part of a Zoom call with 30 other faces, old friends and teammates he once knew his brothers at Yale.
It was Aug. 31, toward the end of Graham’s first training camp as Giants defensive coordinator.
His former teammates didn’t expect Graham to talk much. He was quiet at Yale, back when he was a little-used defensive lineman, not even sure if he loved football yet. He definitely never thought he’d become a coach. When Graham first went to Yale, he had dreams of joining the CIA one day. He started out majoring in chemical engineering.
