Flooding could continue through Sunday, forcing evacuations

Parts of North Port received up to a foot of rain from Tropical Storm Elsa, as a deluge fell on the city for three hours on Tuesday night. Similar amounts of rain in areas to the north also are pushing more water south. In preparation, the National Weather Service issued a flood warning Thursday for southeastern Sarasota County. The warning will remain in effect until at least mid-afternoon Saturday. Water levels rose to 8.4 feet as of 10 a.m. on Friday at Myakka State Park. Those levels are expected to reach a crest of 9.2 feet by Sunday morning, flooding that s likely to drain down through North Port. 

North Port eyes rising floodwaters after Tropical Storm Elsa

The flood warning for the Myakka River at Myakka State Park continues, with the water level at 6.6 feet, as of 10 a.m. Thursday. Flood stage is 7 feet. The river was expected to rise above flood stage Thursday afternoon and rise as high as 8.9 feet Saturday afternoon. The previous crest high at Myakka State Park was 8.9 feet on Aug. 28. 1962. In addition, rainfall runoff from farther north in the Myakka River Basin from Elsa is flowing toward Charlotte Harbor and ultimately the Gulf of Mexico.  The Myakkahatchee Creek, which runs through North Port, is the mouth of Big Slough, which is part of the watershed.

Some families were choosing to leave their homes Thursday, as water could significantly rise in the next 72 hours. Families are doing everything they can to protect themselves and their properties. The City of North Port sent out sandbags to help families in the process. Some said they didn’t want to risk it and went to an evacuation shelter. Police blocked off a section of Tropicaire Boulevard, and they’re only letting people who live there into the area.
