CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - The Thomas Jefferson Health District (TJHD) is hoping to test more people COVID-19 a little later in the week.
Winter weather caused TJHD to cancel its plans to offer testing in Fluvanna County Wednesday, December 16. As a result, more tests are scheduled to be available at Charlottesville High School from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 18.
The health department’s testing sites usually swab 100 people, but it plans to double that for Friday’s testing.

Back in the 1990s, the casino industry unwillingly provided the seed capital to found what became one of the major providers of 3D computer-aided design software.
SolidWorks Inc. got its start in 1993 thanks to capital and entrepreneurial initiative provided by Jon Hirschtick, an MIT graduate who was part of a team of students that developed a card-counting system to win huge sums of money in Las Vegas during the late 1980s and early 1990s. The group became the subject of a best-selling book and Hollywood movie, and Hirschtick used $1 million of his winnings to found SolidWorks.
After selling the company to Dessault Systems SA in 1997, Hirschtick went on to co-found Onshape Inc., which was acquired by PTC Inc. in 2019 for $470 million. He’s still taking calculated risks today, this time as president of the Software-as-a-Service Division at PTC. But now his gambles are in engineering labs instead smoky casino floors.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - As coronavirus cases persist in the Charlottesville area, the Thomas Jefferson Health District (TJHD) is ramping up its testing efforts before Christmas.
“We’ve had at our community testing sites a fairly low percent positivity and now we are seeing a much higher percentage of positivity at just our testing sites, matching the state average,” TJHD Emergency Coordinator Jessica Coughlin said.
With more COVID-19 cases emerging after the Thanksgiving holiday, TJHD is trying to avoid another spike following Christmas.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - Charlottesville City Schools hosted its second Response to Essential Needs (R.E.N.) event at Charlottesville High School on Saturday.
Educators and volunteers gave away hundreds of hygiene kits, books, clothes and food items to families in need on a first-come, first-served basis.
Bianca Johnson, an organizer for the event, said they doubled the amount of items given away because the need was greater than they expected at the first R.E.N. event hosted earlier in the fall.

“I was like, super shock. I didn’t know what to say,” CHS freshman Mariam Sadat said. “I was like really like shaking, like shivering.”
