(Charlottesville, VA) The School Board of Charlottesville City Schools announced today that it has hired Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates (HYA), based in Rosemont, Illinois, to conduct the search for a superintendent for Charlottesville City Schools. After holding the role of Charlottesville’s superintendent for 15 years, Dr. Rosa S. Atkins is retiring effective May 31, 2021 and assuming a cabinet-level position with the Virginia Department of Education.
“The School Board’s role is to support the schools, and the best way we can do that is to hire the right leader as superintendent,” said Charlottesville City Schools Board chair Lisa Larson-Torres. “To help us with that process, we’ve hired HYA. The School Board and HYA are committed to listening to community voices to help us find the right match to assure the continued success of our schools.”

(CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA) On Monday, May 3 at 5 p.m., the Charlottesville City Schools Superintendent Committee on Facilities Names will host its first public meeting to gather input in the naming of schools. The meeting will focus on Clark and Venable, the two oldest schools in the division and the first to be considered for review.
The Committee on Facilities Names was created by Dr. Rosa Atkins in the fall of 2020 to create a process for review and to guide the community through discussion and decision-making. The schools’ websites notes, “Like many communities, universities, and K-12 schools across the country, Charlottesville City Schools is aware that our schools’ names send a message to our students, staff, and community and should therefore reflect our values.”
Temi Akinola
Akinola of Charlottesville, a 2020 global security and justice and French language and literature graduate, is an English teaching assistant in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.
“I am particularly interested in education and its formation on peace-building and human rights,” she said. “I will be teaching English at an all-girls high school, completing tutoring college prep programs through the U.S Embassy and working with the National Council for Human Rights in [Ivory Coast].”
She was supposed to start in October 2020, but that was moved to the beginning of February.
“My stay has been condensed,” she said. “Some of the programs that would usually take place in person, such as student workshops, question-and-answer sessions and panels, have had to take place online or via Zoom.”
