F Street closures could be summer fixtures Two blocks of F Street, from Second to First Street and from First to Sackett, will once again be closed to traffic for the coming summer and fall visitor season. A year ago, the Salida City Council was looking for ways to boost restaurant businesses, hit hard by coronavirus restrictions. After a negative public response nixed opening city parks to alcohol consumption – drinks presumably brought from restaurants and bars – the council decided to close the two blocks. At the time we criticized the decision, noting that it would eliminate considerable parking and that the council did not ask the public or F Street merchants for comment before taking action.

Salida OKs F Street closure

Salida City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to approve a resolution regarding the summertime closure of F Street to vehicles, similar to the closure in 2020. A paragraph which would have allowed the possibility of food trucks and mobile food vendors in the area was removed following public comment by several downtown restaurant and other business owners, and based on discussion from the previous evening’s work session. Added to the resolution were modifications made in response to feedback from last summer’s experience: • A clear travel path of six feet down the center of the street will be preserved. Where necessary barrier fencing is available to delineate this pathway from adjacent uses.

City discuses F Street pedestrian mall for summer season

Salida City Council discussed reopening of the pedestrian mall on F Street, closing the road during the summer season from Second to First  streets, then from First Street to Sackett Avenue.  The city received a $37,606 grant from the Colorado Department of Transportation’s Revitalizing Main Streets program, with the city matching 10 percent. Salida used the funds to purchase four shade pergolas, solar lighting for the pergolas, 14 animal-proof trash and recycling containers, eight Adirondack chairs, three portable ADA ramps, 30 steel barricades to help define the in-street pedestrian path and anti-graffiti protection. City Administrator Drew Nelson said they are working on setting up a clear travel area down the middle of the street which will be at least 6 feet wide, to allow for social distancing.
