Fatal Shooting Involving Roswell Police Department and Chaves County Sheriff s Office

By news editor and partners • 5 hours ago    Roswell, NM- On April 15, 2021, the New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau was contacted to investigate a police shooting involving the Roswell Police Department (RPD) and the Chaves County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO). At approximately 11:26 p.m., a sergeant with CCSO attempted to initiate a traffic stop on a white Ford pick-up truck on Matthews Street and South Main Street in Roswell, New Mexico. The vehicle fled and a pursuit was initiated.  The driver, later identified as Victor Ivan Barron (22) of Roswell, traveled west on Matthews Street to Pennsylvania. During the pursuit, CCSO requested the assistance of RPD. RPD deployed tire deflation devices at Union Avenue and Country Club Road. Two Roswell officers and a Chaves County deputy opened fire on a man Thursday night during a foot chase in Roswell, according to New Mexico State Police. State Police spokesman Mark Soriano said Victor Barron, 22, was killed in the incident. No deputies or officers were injured. He said around 11:30 p.m. a Chaves County Sheriff’s Office sergeant tried to pull over Barron near Matthews and Main. Barron fled the traffic stop in a pickup truck. Soriano said Roswell police used spike strips on the truck and Barron got out of the truck and a “short foot pursuit” began.

Jeffrey Contreras (Submitted Photo) The warrant charges Jeffrey Contreras, 25, of Roswell with one count each of first-degree murder, willful and deliberate; tampering with evidence; and felon in possession of a firearm in connection with the shooting death of Anthony Vasquez, 57, of Roswell, according to a press release issued Wednesday by RPD. Court Records for New Mexico’s 5th Judicial District Court state that a motion for pre-trial detention and concurrent preliminary hearing in the case are scheduled for Feb. 25.
