It felt a lot like the Alfred Hitchcock horror movie “The Birds” when hundreds of unusual birds filled the lobby of Hotel Dunsmuir last Monday.
Hotel owner Mark Juarez said he and some co-workers left the hotel around 9 p.m. and returned about an hour later on April 26 to find 600 swifts in the lobby and hallway.
Although Juarez identified the birds as chimney swifts – a common eastern bird – the identification wasn’t confirmed by an expert. The birds could also have been Vaux’s Swifts or Black Swifts, which are more commonly found on the west coast and look similiar to chimney swifts.

After 10 years of work, Siskiyou County Fire Department agencies along with CAL FIRE and Mountain Medics have created a new well trained and equipped water rescue team.
CAL FIRE Siskiyou Unit Captain Casey Cohen has been one of the driving forces behind building the Siskiyou County Water Rescue Team.
“We go on about 15 to 20 water rescues a year,” Cohen said. “Now with COVID-19, water recreation in Siskiyou County has increased and we are expecting more rescues. We are excited that all the different agencies are working together under the same guidelines and performance standards.”

On a pristine morning at Lake Siskiyou last week, Mt. Shasta Rotary and a group of 20 volunteers released 900 Alaska-sized rainbow trout from the fish pens near the marina, the third straight spring with a successful release.
Most of the trout range 17 to 23 inches, with a sprinkling smaller and larger, including individuals in the 5 to 7 pound range.
“Our goal is to provide an opportunity for local children and their parents that they can’t find anywhere else,” said Mt. Shasta Rotary President-elect Tom Stienstra, program chairman. “It costs thousands of dollars to go to Alaska to catch fish like these. Yet here they are, right in our backyard.”
